Biden Commutes Drug Sentences: A Historic Decision or What?

President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of 2,500 individuals convicted of drug-related offenses, correcting excessively harsh penalties, according to a statement from the White House, as reported by NewsBox.

President Joe Biden signed an order reducing the sentences of 2,500 individuals convicted of offenses related to drugs. The official announcement, published on the White House website, emphasizes that the measure applies to individuals who received disproportionately long sentences compared to contemporary standards.

The reforms target the disparities in sentences for possessing five grams of crack cocaine and 500 grams of powder cocaine. Thanks to the Biden administration's initiatives, these differences in sentencing have been eliminated, allowing thousands of incarcerated individuals to have their sentences shortened.

Biden also noted that after this decision, he has become the president who granted the highest number of individual pardons and sentence commutations compared to any previous U.S. leader in history.
