Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on his official inauguration as the President of the United States and emphasized the importance of dialogue between the nations. According to Putin, Moscow welcomes the statements from the new American leader regarding the intention to reestablish contacts with Russia and the efforts to prevent global conflicts, including the threat of a third world war.

Putin stated that Moscow has never refused dialogue with Washington — including over the "Ukrainian conflict." 

He highlighted that a priority should be to address the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine and to ensure a lasting peace that takes into account the interests of all the peoples living in the region.

The Russian leader expressed hope that this new phase of Russian-American relations will help overcome existing differences and contribute to global security.
