Australian Prime Minister Threatens Russia After Shocking Video of Captive Emerges
A video showing the beating of Australian captive Oscar Jenkins, who fought on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has sparked a strong reaction from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who has threatened Russia with "decisive measures," NewsBox reports.
In December, a video featuring 32-year-old Australian Oscar Jenkins, who was captured by Russian forces during combat on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, spread across social media. In footage shared by Russian war correspondent Alexander Sladkov, Jenkins is seen with his hands tied, being interrogated and beaten.
Today, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his country would take "decisive measures" against Russia if it is confirmed that the captive Australian was subjected to violence or killed. While specific actions have not yet been outlined, it is known that Russia's ambassador to Canberra has been summoned to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has demanded an official explanation from Russia.
According to ABC News, Jenkins's body was reportedly found in the same area where the video was filmed. If confirmed, this would mark the first death of an Australian citizen in Russian captivity.
The Associated Press notes that Australia is awaiting an official response from Russia to its inquiries and is closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds.
