U.S. vs. The Hague: Trump Implements Tough Sanctions Against the ICC

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). These sanctions will affect financial transactions and visas for court personnel, reports NewsBox.

The Trump administration announced the introduction of sanctions against the ICC. According to a White House representative, the president will sign the corresponding executive order on Thursday.

The sanctions will involve financial and visa restrictions for ICC staff members and their families. This decision comes in response to the court's investigations against the United States and its allies, particularly Israel.

Previously, Senate Democrats blocked a Republican initiative to impose sanctions against the ICC in protest of arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

In anticipation of the sanctions, the ICC had already implemented financial measures, paying employees three months' salary upfront.

This is the second instance in which the U.S. has imposed sanctions against the court. In 2020, during Trump's first administration, sanctions were placed on ICC's chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and the head of the jurisdiction division, Fakiso Bensouda, for investigating alleged U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan.
