U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to utilize the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to accommodate up to 30,000 migrants. He directed the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to prepare a suitable detention facility, reports NewsBox.

According to Trump's statement, this facility is intended for holding "the most dangerous criminal illegals under guard," as reported by Reuters.

"Some of them are so bad that we don't even trust their countries to detain them because we don't want them to come back, so we're going to send them to Guantanamo," said the President, emphasizing that this decision will "immediately double" the U.S. capacity for detaining migrants.

Later, Trump signed a memorandum calling for the creation of "additional detention spaces" in an expanded center, without specifying the exact number of migrants. According to Border Commissioner Tom Homan, the management of the facility will be handed over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

Previously, Guantanamo Bay had an immigration center used over decades to detain Haitians and Cubans intercepted at sea.

The prison facility in Guantanamo was established in 2002 for holding foreign terrorism suspects after the September 11 attacks. Currently, 15 detainees remain there. Former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden attempted to close the prison, but Trump has vowed to keep it open.
