Trump Keeps His Promise: Tariffs on Imports to Start February 1

Starting February 1, the United States will impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, as announced by the White House. The tariff rate for the North American countries will be set at 25%, while for China it will be 10%, reports NewsBox.

The US administration announced the introduction of new trade tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico, and China. According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, the additional tariffs will take effect on February 1.

According to the decision, goods from Canada and Mexico will be subject to a 25% levy, while imports from China will see a 10% duty.

Previously, Reuters reported that the US might postpone the introduction of the new levies to March 1 to allow countries time to negotiate. However, Leavitt refuted this information, calling it false.

Donald Trump announced his intention to introduce new tariffs back in November 2024, right after winning the presidential elections. He explained this as a necessity to combat illegal immigration and drug smuggling, particularly fentanyl, which he claims enters the US through the borders with Canada and Mexico.

On inauguration day, January 20, Trump reiterated that the tariffs would be implemented on February 1.

As noted by Axios, the decision could lead to retaliatory economic sanctions from Canada, Mexico, and China. This, in turn, threatens potential losses for American businesses and rising prices for consumers.
