Zamir, who is 59 years old, began his military service in the armored corps in 1984. He is currently serving as the Director General of the Ministry of Defense. His official appointment will take place on March 6.

He will replace Herzi Halevi, who previously announced his resignation, stating that he takes responsibility for the army's failure to protect Israeli citizens during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
