Troubles loom over the picturesque island of Santorini due to a series of earthquakes. The Greek authorities swiftly responded to the seismic activity by dispatching rescue teams to the island and implementing safety measures to ensure the well-being of both locals and tourists, reports NewsBox.

Between February 1st and 3rd, approximately 200 earthquakes were recorded in the area around Santorini and the nearby island of Amorgos, with magnitudes ranging from 3 to 4.9. The epicenters of these tremors are located under the sea, 30-40 km away from the islands.

Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos noted that seismic activity began on January 24th but intensified on February 1st. Despite the epicenters being underwater, authorities do not rule out the possibility of a stronger earthquake occurring and have called for vigilance, writes The Associated Press.

A specialized rescue team, equipped with a search dog and drones, arrived at Santorini, where they set up a tent camp. Residents have been warned to stay away from cliffs and areas prone to landslides.

Authorities also urged residents and hotels to drain their swimming pools to reduce potential damage to buildings in the event of a strong earthquake. People are advised to avoid old buildings, check evacuation routes, and refrain from gathering in large groups indoors. Schools on Santorini and the neighboring islands of Anafi, Amorgos, and Ios are closed for the entire week.

Santorini is situated along the Greek volcanic arc. Last week, scientists recorded moderate seismic-volcanic activity in the island's caldera, but seismologists assert that the current earthquakes are not related to volcanic activity. Additionally, the Kolumbo underwater volcano is located near the earthquake epicenters.
