Chinese AI DeepSeek prompts Trump to impose tariffs on semiconductors

In response to the success of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek, Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on the import of semiconductors and other essential goods, reports NewsBox.
U.S. President Donald Trump declared that his administration will introduce tariffs on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, steel, aluminum, and copper imports. This announcement came shortly after the success of the Chinese AI startup's model, DeepSeek.
According to Bloomberg, Trump's comments were made just hours after the market capitalization of U.S. chip manufacturer Nvidia dropped by over $600 billion. This was attributed to the launch of DeepSeek, which was developed with only $6 million, compared to the billions invested by American companies in their AI models.
Trump indicated that the creation of DeepSeek should be a "wake-up call" for American companies, which, according to him, need to enhance their competitiveness. He also added that American scientists are the best in the world, a fact acknowledged even by members of the Chinese leadership.
