Syria against Moscow? Damascus Demands Assad's Extradition

Details have emerged about Russia's negotiations with Syria's new leadership — Damascus is demanding the handover of Bashar al-Assad, and the future of Russian military bases remains uncertain, reports NewsBox.
The new Syrian authorities have asked Russia to hand over the former president Bashar al-Assad. This was reported by Reuters, citing sources familiar with the negotiations. The continuation of Russian military bases in the region likely hinges on this decision.
A Russian delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov arrived in Syria on January 28. During their meeting with the new administration's head, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the sides discussed bilateral relations. Official statements claim the Russian military presence in the country remains unchanged, and consultations will continue.
According to Reuters, Ahmed al-Sharaa put forward the demand for Assad's extradition during the talks. Meanwhile, the Syrian news agency SANA reported that Damascus insists on "compensations, reconstruction, and respect for the will of the Syrian people." However, there is no official confirmation yet on the demand for the former president's extradition.
Currently, there are two Russian military bases in Syria: the Khmeimim airbase and a naval facility in Tartus. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that their continued operation depends on agreements with the country's new authorities.
