Russian Interference? Romania's Elections Nullified and President Resigns

The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, announced he will step down from his position on February 12th. His decision comes amid opposition calls for impeachment, as reported by NewsBox.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis declared his intention to resign early on February 12th. His departure is linked to pressure from the opposition, who are pushing for his resignation through impeachment proceedings.
According to the initial schedule, Iohannis's term was set to end on December 21, 2024, after which a new president was to be elected. However, the results of the first round of elections held in November were annulled by the Constitutional Court due to suspicions of Russian interference. The vote had initially resulted in a victory for pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu, sparking widespread protests across the country.
The next election is scheduled for May 4, 2025. Until then, one of the country's top officials will temporarily assume the duties of Head of State as provided by the Romanian Constitution.
