The new Syrian authorities have expressed their willingness to retain Russian military bases, but only if it benefits the country. The head of the transitional government, Murhaf Abu Kasra, noted that Moscow has changed its stance towards the new administration, reports NewsBox
Syria's transitional government is prepared to maintain Russian military bases, but only under the condition that it serves the state's interests. This was stated by Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Kasra in an interview with The Washington Post.
According to him, Russia's attitude towards the new Syrian leadership became more favorable following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. He also emphasized that in international politics, there are no permanent allies or enemies.
WP journalists claim that the Kremlin might offer the new Syrian government one of its most valuable assets – Assad himself. However, the minister declined to comment on whether the topic of handing over the former president was raised during negotiations. Nevertheless, he noted that the issue of holding Assad accountable was indeed discussed.
