Naming Controversy: Russia Opposes U.S. Decision

The Russian Geographical Society has declined to rename the Gulf of Mexico, stating that Trump's directive does not apply to Russia, reports NewsBox.

The Russian Geographical Society (RGS) does not plan to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to American Gulf, despite the corresponding decision by U.S. authorities. Russian scholars clarified that the order from former President Donald Trump has no relevance to Russian cartography.

Anatoly Pogorelov, head of the RGS cartography commission, explained that the organization adheres to historically established names. According to him, changes adopted in other countries do not impact the cartographic standards accepted in Russia.

The name "Gulf of Mexico" is tied to the region's history—at one time, the coastline surrounding the water body was under Mexican control. However, following territorial changes in the 19th century, a significant portion of these lands came under U.S. control.
