Moscow Faces a Loss as the Baltics Disconnect from Russian Energy

Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have fully disconnected from the energy grid linking them with Russia, completing their exit from the 'BRELL Ring' due to concerns over energy coercion, reports NewsBox.

The Baltic states — Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia — have officially ceased using the unified power system that connected them with Russia and Belarus. This disconnection from the 'BRELL Ring', which had supplied energy to the region since Soviet times, was planned in advance and driven by the threat of energy pressure from Moscow.

The preparation for leaving the system took several months, primarily motivated by the Baltic countries' desire to reduce reliance on Russian electricity and enhance their energy security.

The departure of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia from BRELL has left Russia's Kaliningrad region isolated from the main power grid. However, the region had anticipated this scenario and built additional power plants to compensate. Russian authorities claim that Kaliningrad currently has a surplus of electricity and is not facing any supply issues.
