"We've Developed Our Own Legislation": Lukashenko on Elections and Democracy

Alexander Lukashenko stated that import substitution in Russia and Belarus has also influenced the electoral process. He emphasized that the countries have ensured 'electoral sovereignty' by rejecting Western standards in favor of their own legislation, reports NewsBox.
At a press conference in Minsk, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko explained that import substitution efforts in Russia and Belarus extend beyond industry, impacting the electoral process as well. According to him, the countries have established 'electoral sovereignty' by creating legislation based on internal principles rather than adhering to the 'mythical democratic values' of the West.
"We have established our own [electoral legislation]. We are no longer following the Western path; we are forging our own way, while taking your [Western] experience into account," noted Lukashenko.
He added that this approach benefits both Russia and Belarus, allowing them to maintain independence in this matter.
Lukashenko, who is currently seeking reelection for the seventh term, also touched upon the topic of industrial import substitution. He urged citizens to support domestic manufacturers, temporarily forgoing familiar Western brands.
"Let's switch from driving 'Mercedes' to 'Moskvitches' and 'Ladas' for a while. They're not bad... They [Western companies] also used to bring us their technologies. Let's push ourselves, mobilize, and in time, we will catch up; we are capable of achieving a lot," he emphasized.
