The End of the CIS? Multilateral Treaties Nullified Without Replacement

The Commonwealth of Independent States is effectively ceasing to exist: several key treaties within its framework have officially lost their validity, reports NewsBox.
The legal information portal has published a protocol on the termination of several multilateral agreements signed within the CIS framework on December 1, 2000. The documents lost their legal force due to the expiration of their terms, and no replacement agreements within the organization were signed.
Some of the annulled treaties had a strategic nature.
Among the agreements that were terminated:
- Treaty on joint air defense;
- Agreement on direct scientific and technical cooperation;
- Document on the organization of a unified military command;
- Agreement on the council of defense ministers;
- Treaty on strategic armed forces;
- Agreement on a unified credit and monetary system.
For the Russian Federation, these changes took effect on December 9, 2024. Meanwhile, a significant portion of the treaties was never practically implemented, and several countries that were part of the CIS (Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia) had effectively left the organization.
As a result, the CIS continues to exist only in form, while its future remains uncertain.
