Hungary Lifts Veto: EU to Continue Sanctions Pressure on Moscow

The European Union has extended sanctions against Russia after Hungary agreed not to obstruct this decision in exchange for guarantees related to energy security, reports NewsBox.

The European Union extended the duration of its sanctions against Russia, aimed at curtailing its revenues used for financing the war. This was announced by the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, noting that EU foreign ministers reached a consensus after Hungary withdrew its objections.

Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó specified that his country received guarantees in the field of energy security, which became a key factor in lifting the objections. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had previously emphasized the need for consultations with the new U.S. administration, but President Donald Trump confirmed support for exerting pressure on Moscow through sanctions and tariffs.

The push for increased sanctions pressure on Russia was also supported by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, who stated that such measures are necessary for achieving peace.
