Harsh Crackdown in Georgia: Opposition Members and Former Tbilisi Mayor Arrested

In Tbilisi, protesters blocked the highway near Tbilisi Mall, prompting a strong police response and several arrests. Among those detained were Gigi Ugulava, the former mayor of the capital, and Nika Melia, a leader of the 'Coalition for Change.' The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs had previously declared the road a strategic object, warning that obstructing it could result in up to two years of imprisonment, reports NewsBox.
Mass protests against the suspension of European integration are ongoing in Georgia, having started on November 28, 2024. Today marks the 66th day of the demonstrations.
One of the largest demonstrations took place in Tbilisi: protesters blocked the road near Tbilisi Mall, which connects the capital with the western regions of the country. According to Paper Kartuli, police have begun a forceful dispersal of the rally.
Previously, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that this road was included in the list of strategic objects. This designation occurred on January 31, right after the protest action was announced. Participants now face up to two years in prison for blocking it.
During the dispersal, former Tbilisi mayor and opposition politician Gigi Ugulava and one of the leaders of the 'Coalition for Change,' Nika Melia, were detained. Additionally, according to 'Echo of the Caucasus,' TV Pirveli cameraman Niko Kokaia was injured.
Despite the police managing to partially clear the road, a significant traffic jam remains at the exit from Tbilisi.
