Armenia officially begins the process of European integration

The Armenian Parliament has backed the initiative to start the process of the country's accession to the European Union. The document, introduced by civil organizations, received government approval, but the final decision will be made through a referendum, reports NewsBox.

Armenia's National Assembly voted in favor of initiating the process to join the European Union. The proposal was put forward by Artak Zeynalyan with the support of several public organizations, who gathered over 60,000 signatures, exceeding the constitutional requirement of 50,000.

The government approved the initiative back in January 2025. However, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that this step does not guarantee Armenia's automatic entry into the EU. According to the head of the government, the ultimate decision will be subject to a public vote.

The process of Armenia's European integration could take years, as it involves meeting a range of political, economic, and legal criteria, as well as gaining consent from all EU member states. Despite these challenges, parliamentary approval marks an important step towards potential EU membership.
