180 Mobsters, Including Cosa Nostra Leaders, Arrested in Italy

Italian police have apprehended over 180 mafia members, including top leaders of the Cosa Nostra. This extensive operation took place in Palermo and its surroundings, involving more than 1,200 Carabinieri, reports NewsBox.

A massive operation against organized crime was conducted in Italy with over 180 mobsters arrested, including leaders of the Cosa Nostra. The operation, aimed at dismantling criminal clans in Palermo and nearby areas, involved over 1,200 Carabinieri.

According to Italian media, those detained face charges of murder, drug trafficking, extortion, and illegal arms dealing. The operation was overseen by the Palermo prosecutor's office.

Such a large-scale arrest hasn't occurred since the historic 1984 trial when the mobster Tommaso Buscetta broke 'omertà' (code of silence) and testified against the Cosa Nostra. However, this time the investigation was based not on testimonies, but instead on wiretapped conversations of mobsters, who, relying on encrypted phones, discussed criminal operations, openly naming each other.

Although the 'Ndrangheta is currently considered the most powerful mafia, the Cosa Nostra maintains a strong presence in Sicily and continues to operate beyond its borders.
