A planned renovation at a children's playground in the town of Wooler, Northumberland, led to an unexpected discovery: workers found dozens of unexploded bombs from the Second World War, reports NewsBox.

Local authorities immediately called in bomb disposal experts, according to CNN citing a statement from the parish council.

Initially, British military personnel removed two bombs, and it was recommended to the parish council to conduct a comprehensive survey of the area, confirmed a council representative.

On the first day of the operation, Brimstone Site Investigation, a company specializing in bomb disposal, found 65 ten-pound practice bombs and smoke canisters. The following day, 90 more practice bombs were extracted. Company representatives confirmed to CNN that the munitions date back to the Second World War.

The parish council stated that the park will remain closed until all bombs are discovered and safely removed. To date, 174 devices have been found.

"Despite being classified as practice munitions, they still contain explosive material. Considering the number found, professionals should handle their removal to ensure safety for contractors and future playground visitors," says the council's statement.

Local politician Mark Mazer told the BBC that the area was used for National Guard volunteer training during the Second World War. It is assumed that after the war, the munitions were simply buried.

The parish council added that additional excavations will be conducted to ensure the complete absence of unexploded munitions on the playground before new equipment is installed.
