Akhmat Fighters Cause Explosion in Belgorod: One Dead, Four Hospitalized

An explosion occurred in a residential building in Belgorod housing fighters from the Chechen special forces unit 'Akhmat.' One serviceman died, and four were injured, with about 40 residents evacuated. reports NewsBox.  

In the afternoon of January 25, a private residence on Surgutsky Lane in Belgorod experienced an explosion followed by a fire and the detonation of ammunition. According to ASTRA's data, members of the Chechen special forces 'Akhmat' were residing there. The incident resulted in the death of one serviceman and injuries to four others. A police officer who arrived at the scene was also injured.

The 59-year-old owner of the house, Elena S., stated that she housed the soldiers on a voluntary basis. According to her, the fighters only paid for utility expenses. Emergency service sources reported that the explosion was caused by improperly stored ammunition, which began detonating during the fire.

Local authorities evacuated about 40 residents from 17 neighboring houses but have not officially disclosed the cause of the incident. The mayor of Belgorod, Valentin Demidov, claimed that the event was not related to shelling and assured that no casualties or injuries occurred, which contradicts the reports from independent sources.
