A Court for Putin? EU Endorses Project for International Tribunal

The European Union has approved a project to establish a Special Tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression against Ukraine. The court will operate independently from the International Criminal Court and aim to hold Russia's top leadership accountable, reports NewsBox.

The Council of Europe has agreed on the legal foundation for the creation of a Special Tribunal, which will address cases related to the act of aggression against Ukraine. This was reported by the "Russian Service of the BBC".

If the tribunal is established, it will function independently of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and serve as a separate mechanism for bringing those who made decisions on military invasion to justice.

The crime of aggression differs from other international violations, such as war crimes or crimes against humanity. It assigns responsibility solely to the highest government officials who initiated the war. As such, if the tribunal is set up, Vladimir Putin could become the main figure involved.
