Sentences Issued in Tajikistan Over Alleged Coup Attempt

On February 5, the Supreme Court of Tajikistan delivered a verdict in the case concerning an alleged 'attempted coup.' Defendants, including former officials, politicians, and journalists, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 17 to 27 years. Journalist Rukhshona Khakimova received an 8-year prison sentence, reports NewsBox.

The Supreme Court of Tajikistan handed down sentences in the high-profile case regarding the 'attempted state coup.' According to Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe's information, the court sentenced those involved to between 17 and 27 years in prison. Among those convicted were former heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a former Chairman of the Supreme Soviet, and former security officers and politicians.

Back in December 2024, during one of the hearings, the accused rejected the charges, claiming they were pressured by the investigators, with evidence being fabricated against them.

Additionally, the court sentenced journalist Rukhshona Khakimova to 8 years in prison, despite the prosecution seeking a 17-year sentence for her. She was taken into custody in the courtroom, while her two young children, including an eight-month-old baby, were placed with relatives.

Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe reports that the criminal case against Khakimova might have been initiated due to her article on China's influence in Tajikistan. However, the exact charges remain unknown, as the case materials are classified.
